Dr. Cvek Promoted

Effective 19 August 2009, Dr. Cvek will be promoted to the rank of Associate Professor with tenure. This action by the LSU Board of Supervisors is well deserved.

Drs. Cvek and Trutschl part of a team to receive NIH grant renewal

A multi-million dollar grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has been renewed for the collaborative research conducted at the LSUHSC Center for Molecular and Tumor Virology (CMTV). The grant has funded the CMTV for the past five years and with the renewal for another five years - the total of the 5 years of funding is $9,704.477.00. The center involves an interactive group of 18 faculty members who carry out independent research in various areas concerning the molecular biology, pathogenesis and immunology of viruses. Two of those professors are LSUS faculty, Marjan Trutschl,Sc.D. and Urska Cvek, Sc.D. The new Center grant will fund three cores, an administrative Core, a Molecular Analysis Core and a Bioinformatics Core (http://www.lsuhscmicrobiology.com/biocore.htm). The Bioinformatics Core will be located on the LSUS campus under the direction of Drs. Trutschl and Cvek. Bioinformatics and computational biology are essential tools to support the ongoing research in molecular virology. The NIH Center grant has been funded through the Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) program. The program has generated more than $18 million to support research in molecular and tumor virology. One of the major aims of the CMTV is to support the research of junior faculty members working in various areas of virology.

BORSF grants awarded to CS faculty

This past year Dr. Emre Celebi was awarded a Board of Regents Special Fund (BORSF) research grant.

Careers in Science Investigations at LSUS

This past June the College of Sciences at LSUS held  5-day camps for area high school students to introduce them to careers in the fields of computer science, mathematics, biology and physics/chemistry. In the computer science camp, a number of representatives from local computing industry companies gave presentations on the fact that there is a shortage of trained computing professionals and what it is like to work at their companies.?  A representative from Barksdale Air Force Base also spoke on the nature of CyberCommand.

The Computer Science faculty gave presentations on the nature of computer science, programming, computer networks, bioinformatics and virtual worlds/computer game development.  The purpose was to help the students better understand the field of computing and the careers that are available in the field.
